Here's the story of an Ob/Gyn physician from Cincinnati, Ohio, who felt called to devote a part of her life to medical missions....So she packed up her cat and stepped out in faith to serve for two years in Kenya....Now, she's back in the US and is searching for God's wisdom and direction...

Leaving SomeWhere....
In July, I began working as a laborist in SomeWhere, Ohio. It's a small hospital; I remember being underwhelmed when I first learned that they do only 300 deliveries per year. However, the amount of pathology and the challenges I've encountered over the past few months managed to keep me QUITE busy. I really can not say enough nice things about the hospital, the nurses, the town and my temporary partner, OtherDoc. I realize that many new docs leave their first jobs a little disenchanted, but I have had a truly awesome experience.
A Few Things I Learned:
1) Whether you have an ingrown "hair" or child-birth related pains - there's nothing like some VicaSnacks or PercaSnacks to ease your suffering. I actually already knew this, but I suppose it's comforting to know some things are the same - no matter what hospital you work at in the US.
2) I understand now why attendings like to operate with their partners: because it's FUN!
3) I like Wal-Mart. A lot. Too Much.
4) Working in a Level 1 hospital can be very challenging; you are constantly having to think 5 steps ahead. I can remember many times as a resident, thinking -"If this doesn't work, we can just deliver her, no problem." Well it IS a problem if you have no NICU or special Care Nursery. There are truly no EASY jobs in medicine.
5) If you write legibly, people are willing to overlook many other faults. :-)
6) I am a "real" doctor. And in the middle of the night, there's oftentime no one but you, God and whatever you learned in residency to get you through the night. And when you are finished with the night - there are STILL post call clinic/rounds and surgery to do and no one to help. No 80 work week here.
